Where is my data stored?
All your data stays on your device using secure local storage (AsyncStorage). Car Story never uploads your vehicle information, service records, or personal data to any server. Your data is as private as the photos on your phone.
How do I back up my data?
Car Story automatically backs up your data, and syncs it to your private iCloud when you're signed in — so your records survive reinstalling the app or switching to a new device. You can also back up or restore manually any time from Settings → Backup, or use Settings → Export Data to save a JSON file you keep yourself. Backups stay in your own iCloud account; we don't run servers or see your data.
Can I track multiple vehicles?
The free version tracks one vehicle. Car Story Pro (a one-time $4.99 purchase) unlocks unlimited vehicles, plus recall alerts, cost forecasts and benchmarks, and PDF reports. The Insights tab shows combined or per-vehicle analytics.
How does fuel tracking work?
Log fuel stops from the History tab (+ button → Fuel). Just enter the total cost — details like gallons and price per gallon are optional. Car Story calculates your MPG trends, cost per mile, and monthly fuel spending automatically.
How do recall alerts work?
Car Story checks the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) recall database using your vehicle's make, model, and year. Only this vehicle information is sent — no personal data. You can hide or dismiss individual recall alerts.
How are cost benchmarks calculated?
Cost benchmarks are based on published industry averages from AAA, RepairPal, and Edmunds. They show how your maintenance spending compares to the national average for your vehicle's make.
Can I switch between miles/km or USD/EUR?
Yes — go to Settings to change distance units (imperial/metric) and currency (USD, EUR, GBP, KRW). All displays update automatically.
How much does Car Story cost?
Car Story is free to download with no ads and no subscriptions. The free version tracks one vehicle with full logging, photos, and fuel tracking. Car Story Pro is an optional one-time $4.99 purchase that unlocks unlimited vehicles, NHTSA recall alerts, cost forecasts and benchmarks, and PDF reports — pay once, yours forever.
What happens if I delete the app?
If you were signed in to iCloud, your latest backup stays in your iCloud account, and reinstalling Car Story will offer to restore it. If you weren't using iCloud, deleting the app removes your on-device data — so we recommend keeping iCloud on, or exporting a JSON file first (Settings → Export Data). We don't store anything on our own servers.
